Vinay Kumar Named Karnataka Head Coach for New Season

Former India seamer Vinay Kumar has taken charge as Karnataka’s head coach for the upcoming domestic season, stepping into a role that carries real expectations after the team’s runner-up finish last year.

The 42-year-old replaces Yere Goud, and he brings with him years of coaching experience picked up across franchise cricket. Former Karnataka batter Deepak Chougule joins the support staff as fielding coach, giving the dressing room a familiar face during the transition.

Karnataka now heads into a demanding domestic calendar looking to rebuild momentum, and this appointment shows the association betting on someone who already understands the team from the inside.

Vinay Kumar Steps Into New Coaching Role

Vinay takes this job after leading Hubli Tigers through the recent Maharaja T20 Trophy, and Karnataka marks his first assignment as a head coach. His coaching background stretches beyond Indian domestic cricket, as he worked as a bowling coach with MI Emirates in the UAE’s ILT20.

Mumbai Indians also brought him on as a talent scout after he retired from first-class and international cricket in 2021, keeping him close to the professional game even after he stopped playing. Scouting, franchise coaching and domestic T20 cricket have all shaped how he now approaches this new role at Karnataka.

A Playing Career Built on Consistent Performances

Vinay’s playing record still holds up as one of the strongest in Indian domestic cricket. He remains the leading wicket-taker among seamers in the Ranji Trophy with 442 dismissals, and he ranks fifth overall on the tournament’s all-time list.

Across 139 first-class matches, he claimed 504 wickets at an average of 22.44, a record he built over a long career rather than a brief run of form. He also captained Karnataka to an unprecedented double-treble between 2013 and 2015, winning the Vijay Hazare Trophy, the Ranji Trophy and the Irani Cup twice over in that period, a feat that still stands out in the state’s cricketing history.

On the international stage, he played one Test and 31 ODIs for India, and in the IPL, he lifted the trophy with Kolkata Knight Riders in 2014 and later with Mumbai Indians in 2015 and 2017.

Karnataka Eyes Strong Start to New Campaign

Karnataka’s 2026-27 Ranji Trophy campaign gets underway against Andhra on October 11, leaving Vinay and his coaching staff a short window to settle in before the season starts.

After finishing as runners-up last year, the squad will face pressure to perform quickly, and how the players adjust to the new coaching setup in these early weeks could go a long way in shaping the campaign ahead.
