Delhi Capitals have named former India allrounder Yuvraj Singh as their assistant and batting coach for IPL 2027. The franchise made the announcement on Tuesday, a week after it confirmed Sourav Ganguly as head coach.
Yuvraj Singh to Begin First Formal Coaching Role at Delhi Capitals
Yuvraj will work alongside Ganguly in the senior coaching group, and the role is his first formal coaching job. Reports in June had already indicated that both men would join the franchise in leading positions.
Yuvraj thanked the franchise in a statement released by the team. “I am excited to begin a new chapter in my life with the Delhi Capitals,” he said. He added that he shares an old association with the franchise and knows the owners well. He also said he looks forward to teaming up with Ganguly, this time as coaches, and that he is passionate about coaching and eager to start work with the squad.
Capitals chairman and co-owner Parth Jindal welcomed the appointment. He described Yuvraj as one of Indian cricket’s greatest match-winners and said the former allrounder has played a key part in mentoring many of the country’s young talents. Jindal said Yuvraj’s experience, winning mindset and ability to connect with players would help the squad, and he called the return a special moment for everyone linked with the franchise.
Yuvraj Singh’s Past Association With Delhi Capitals
Yuvraj has played for the franchise before. Delhi, then known as Delhi Daredevils, bought him for INR 16 crore ahead of the 2015 season, which made him the most expensive player in IPL history at that point. He played 14 matches for the team that year, scoring 248 runs and taking one wicket.
Across his IPL career, Yuvraj appeared in 132 matches and scored 2,750 runs with 36 wickets. He also played 304 ODIs, 40 Tests and 58 T20Is for India and won the World Cup with the national side. He retired from all forms of cricket in 2019.
Several Indian batters have credited Yuvraj for helping their development in recent years. They include Test and ODI captain Shubman Gill, Abhishek Sharma and Prabhsimran Singh. Rishabh Pant, the former Capitals captain, has also sought his advice during a period of poor form. Pant has since returned to Delhi through a player trade with Lucknow Super Giants, in which wrist-spinner Kuldeep Yadav moved in the opposite direction.
Delhi Capitals Coaching Changes Ahead of IPL 2027
Ganguly replaced Hemang Badani as head coach. The change follows an arrangement between the franchise’s co-owners, GMR Sports and JSW Sports, who agreed after IPL 2024 that each group would run franchise operations in alternating two-year cycles. GMR’s term ended in 2026, and JSW now takes charge.
Delhi are still looking for their first IPL title. They have reached the final once, in 2020, and missed the playoffs in each of the last two seasons. The new coaching group will aim to change that when the 2027 campaign begins.
