The former New Zealand captain brings nearly two decades of coaching experience with Chennai Super Kings in the IPL, a stint that produced five IPL titles and two Champions League T20 trophies. That track record played a major part in convincing the ECB that he was the right man for the job.
England’s managing director of cricket, Rob Key, called Fleming one of the most respected figures in the sport. Root Returns to Full-Time Captaincy
Root steps back into the Test captaincy after Ben Stokes retired from international cricket during the recent series against New Zealand. Root already holds the record for most Tests as England captain, having led the side 65 times. His record stands at 27 wins, 27 losses and 11 draws. He briefly took over the leadership again during the second Test against New Zealand at the Oval, when Stokes was serving a suspension.
Speaking about his return, Root said it is a great honour to be asked to lead England again. He described the job as difficult but rewarding, and said working under Baz McCullum last month gave him a taste of leadership that left him eager to guide the next generation of players. Root also pointed to the chance to work alongside Fleming as a major motivating factor, praising Fleming’s long track record as a knowledgeable and effective leader.

Key expressed confidence in the pairing of Root and Fleming going forward. He noted that Root will now get to lead without the pandemic-related restrictions that limited his first spell as captain. Key described Root as one of England’s greatest cricketers and said he remains committed to building a winning culture within the Test side.
The coaching change marks the end of Brendon McCullum’s association with the England Test team, following a period that reshaped the side’s approach to red-ball cricket.
